Austinmer is a beautiful beach below the escarpment north of Wollongong with fantastic surf, a rock pool, and a large grassy area under pine trees for shade and picnics. The beach is 250 m long. It is situated between two low headlands. Two ocean pools are located on the southern rock platforms. Beware of the hazardous strong permanent rips at each end of the beach. Lifeguards patrol the beach from September to April. There are cafes close by and there are amenities and changing rooms. The beach has picnic facilities such as BBQ's and tables, a car park, kiosk and public toilets and playground equipment. The rock pool is popular with children and swimmers when the beach is rough. To the west the thickly-forested slopes rise to the Illawarra Escarpment. The slopes are criss-crossed with walking tracks that climb to the top of cliffs where you can enjoy stunning views from Bulli Lookout and Sublime Point.
