Coalcliff is a very small picturesque village located on steeply sloping ground, 24 km north of Wollongong and 10 km north of Thirroul. It lies between the Pacific Ocean and the cliffs of the Illawarra escarpment, which drop steeply to the sea at this point. The Sea Cliff Bridge, opened in December 2005, follows the winding coastline but stands with its feet in the sea, owing to the instability of the adjacent cliffs. Coalcliff has a railway station, a surf life-saving club, a small beach (formerly Coalcliff Harbour), a rock pool off Paterson Rd with nearby change rooms and childrenšs play park, plus a parking area for those who wish to walk along the bridge. Fishing is popular in the gutters along the beach and off the broad rock shelves. The main Coalcliff Beach fronts the valley and faces east south east. The beach is about 500 m long. It lies between a southern rock platform containing a rock pool, and northern rocks that have fallen down the cliff. On the north side of these rocks is another narrow beach, backed by sheer 50 m high cliffs and fronted by rocks and reef in the surf.
