Deception Bay is the name of a small bay in Moreton Bay, south of Pummicestone Passage and north of the Redcliffe Peninsula. The town of Deception Bay lies 30km north of Brisbane in the south-eastern corner of the bay. The bay was named in 1823 by explorer John Oxley who was so taken in by the shallow water that he originally thought he was navigating a river. Today the same shallow, sheltered waters make Deception Bay popular for anglers, boat owners and swimmers. It is a central base from which visitors can explore Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast and its hinterland. It is part of the Caboolture shire which extends from the coast into the Glass House Mountains and the D'Aguilar Ranges. Deception Bay's sheltered location and access to both river and bay makes it an excellent spot for recreational boating and fishing.
