Machans Beach, the first beach north of the Cairns, is located on the mouth of the Barron River and is adjacent to the airport. Machans is a quaint residential area. Machans Beach has one small restaurant, two take-away shops, a garage, a Post Office, and a primary school. It is a laid-back residential suburb, and unfortunately the beach was prone to severe erosion many years ago so a large rock wall was erected to prevent the beachfront houses from falling into the ocean. However, there is a large stretch of beach at the far southern end of the bay that is wonderful for afternoon strolls or games or football and cricket. The sand slopes gently to the ocean and at low tide the beach becomes wider than it is long. It is not suitable for swimming. If you are interested in swimming, try the next beach in the chain of northern beaches, Holloways Beach. Machans Beach is only a 10 or 12 minute drive from the centre of Cairns and there is a range of waterfront accommodation at Machans Beach and nearby.
