Orpheus Island is a true Great Barrier Reef island. The surrounding waters contain some of the best coral on the Barrier Reef. In 1960, the entire island of 1,368 hectares (11 km long, 1 km wide) was declared a National Park and later the surrounding waters were declared part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Orpheus Island lies off the coast of Queensland, about 100 km north of Townsville and 50 km east of Ingham. Access is by charter or private boat. The closest boat ramp is at Taylors Beach, 25km from Ingham, or Lucinda. Charter boat access is available from Dungeness (Lucinda) 23km to the northwest. Orpheus has seven beautiful, sandy beaches. There are three walking tracks within the National Park. The resort offers various guided walks. The resort is the only privately owned area on the island. Camping is permitted in the National Park, but permits are required and fees apply. Camping is permitted at Yanks Jetty, South Beach and Pioneer Bay. Campers must be fully self-sufficient in food, water and first aid equipment. Orpheus Island Resort provides luxury accommodation, overlooking Hazard Bay and a beautiful beach. Resort facilities are only available for guests.
