Portland is an attractive and scenic holiday centre and port located on Portland Bay on the Great Ocean Road, 360 km west of Melbourne and 75 km east of the South Australian border. Portland's waterfront is alive with activity - see big ships from around the world come in to load up local produce and the local fishing fleet unload its catch. Portland is an angler's paradise. From a boat or the beach the range of fish that can be hooked is extensive, including King George whiting, flathead, snapper, tuna and mulloway. Portland also has some of the best surf this side of Bells Beach. The choice spots are Bridgewater Bay, the Watertower, Blacknose, Crumpets, Yellow Rock, Whites Beach and Murrells. As the only deep-sea port between Adelaide and Port Phillip it is a major exporting centre for the produce of south-western Victoria and south-eastern South Australia - principally wool, grains and secondary manufactures made in Portland itself. The local fishing industry (focusing particularly on crayfish, lobsters, shark, abalone and deep-sea trawling) is also important. A 10-minute drive out of town takes you to the Cape Nelson State Park, with the rugged coastline dotted with many ship wrecks. In the park, there are walks and picnic areas as well as the Cape Nelson lighthouse, the last manned lighthouse in the state. To the west is Cape Bridgewater, which marks the start of the Discovery Bay Coastal Park which stretches around 50km north-west along the coast to the small town of Nelson, close to the state border with South Australia.
