Hervey Bay is located on the Fraser Coast, and is a popular point from which to visit nearby Fraser Island. Hervey Bay is also a great place to go whale watching, during the whales migration period between July and November. Hervey Bay is a beautiful holiday destination, with its many beaches backed by attractive parkland and greenery. There are five main areas around Hervey Bay including Point Vernon, Scarness, Torquay, Urangan and Pialba. Point Vernon has the turtle hatchery and great fishing at Gatakers Bay, which is also home of a delightful restaurant set right on the coast. Just off the shoreline is a coral reef, popular with those who fancy a spot of snorkeling. It is here where the 13 km walking/cycling/wheelchair waterfront track starts, ending up at the southern beach community of Urangan. Hervey Bay City Council constructed the walkway and also made the conversion of the former railway line into The Links Corridor possible. This is slightly inland, and is a sealed walking/wheelchair/cycling track, part of a 10 year plan. This is an ideal spot for a picnic, one of many in the seaside city, with free barbeques at selected spots along the coastal walkway. There is a wide variety of beachfront accommodation availble.
