Hervey Bay is located on the Fraser Coast, and is a popular point from which to visit nearby Fraser Island. Hervey Bay is also a great place to go whale watching, during the whales migration period between July and November. Hervey Bay is a beautiful holiday destination, with its many beaches backed by attractive parkland and greenery. There are five main areas around Hervey Bay including Urangan, Scarness, Torquay, Pialba and Point Vernon. Urangan is known for its boat harbour, decorated sea wall, botanical gardens, pier, and airport. The Urangan Pier was completed in 1917, measuring just under a kilometre, is ideal for a brisk pre-breakfast walk. Originally for the export of sugar, today, its main use is by amateur fishermen. Beside of the pier a sea wall separates the beach from the Esplanade. There is a wonderful marina at the eastern end of the Bay. This is the departure point for whale watching tours and also for sea access to Fraser Island as well as a very long pier. Slightly inland, just up from Kondari Resort, is one of the 10 best botanic gardens in the State. This is the Great Sandy Region Botanic Garden. At the end of the Esplanade, south of the marina, are the remains of an Aboriginal fish trap. This is not in pristine condition, but its 'bones' can still be identified. The Urangan markets are fairly popular. These are held on the second, fourth (and if five weekends) fifth Sunday of each month. There is a wide variety of beachfront accommodation availble.
